Raymond L. Sheets, Jr., PhD
Ray (he/him) completed his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Western Michigan University. Before settling in Michigan to begin his doctoral work, Ray completed a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology at Loyola University in Maryland. His undergraduate work occurred at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, where he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. Ray is a full member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health.

Ray has worked in the behavioral health field for the past 17 years across a variety of academic and community settings. After finishing his undergraduate and master’s programs, Ray worked primarily in community mental health directing comprehensive crisis intervention programs at a 24-hour crisis agency and homeless shelter.

A majority of his professional work, however, has been with university counseling centers in different parts of the country; he has worked in small liberal arts colleges, as well as large public universities. Ray enjoys working with a broad range of issues and populations but particularly enjoys working with: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender issues; HIV/AIDS and Surviving Chronic Illness; Racial Minority Stress issues; Men and Masculinity issues; College Student Transitions; Trauma and Resilience; and Psychotherapy with Mental Health Practitioners. Ray has been primarily trained to provide individual psychotherapy, though he also has experience working with couples, as well as interpersonal process groups.

In addition to providing psychotherapy, Ray has experience with a variety of psychological assessment needs. He has completed comprehensive evaluations for the following: Learning Disorders (reading, math, writing); ADHD; Refugee, Asylum, and Deportation; Veterans Affairs; Psychological Disability; and general Personality Assessment.
