Dr. Craig (he/him) joined River City Psychological Services in 2015. He is a professor and unit director of the Counselor Education program in the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology at Western Michigan University. He completed a Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Services at the University of North Texas in 1999. For nearly 20 years, Dr. Craig has been a counselor, supervisor of counselors in training, and professor of counseling. He has the educational background, qualifications, and experience to work with a broad range of clients and client concerns.
Dr. Craig believes that counseling is an important way that people invest in their health and in their future. For some, counseling can be a way to work through difficult seasons of life, including career transition, parenting stress, divorce, a conflictual relationship, or grief and loss.
For others who may have a history of sexual or physical abuse, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, or other condition, counseling can be helpful in learning ways to manage symptoms and to continue pursuing a life of joy and contentment. For couples or families, old ways of connecting and resolving problems are no longer working. Counseling and psychotherapy then, become a means to explore a situation, to learn more about how it began, and to identify new ways of resolving those difficulties within the context of a safe, respectful, and collaborative relationship.
Dr. Craig’s approach to counseling and psychotherapy is best characterized as an integrative approach that incorporates elements of the psychodynamic, Adlerian, and cognitive-behavioral traditions. He believes that the counseling relationship is a foundation for the work that follows. His clients can expect a professional relationship marked by respect, honesty, encouragement, and timely challenges to promote growth and change.
